Obituary

William Eugene Roy was born on September 6, 1930, in Monroe County, Arkansas. He was the first of two children born to William and Elsie Roy. After Elsie's passing William married Lou Mooneyham and added four children to the family. William Eugene soon became simply known as Gene and received education through the Brinkley Public schools, graduating in 1948.
On October  31, 1953, he married Jean Staton. The newlyweds made their home in Brinkley and through the years shared the joys and memories of raising four children. His role as a husband, father, grandfather and caretaker brought him immense joy.
He was employed at the Arkansas Power and Light Co, and in 1955, began working alongside his father who owned and operated the local Gulf Station. In time, Gene took over the station and was blessed to work alongside his own children for many years.
His life was filled with many remarkable achievements and contributions. He proudly served his country and community in the National Guard for five years. He was known for his exceptional service and dedication in the Brinkley Fire Department for 38 years, including several years serving as Assistant Fire Chief and was a member of the local Masonic Lodge.
A man of many interests, Gene had a passion for working on cars, and fixing them for free, which his grandchildren loved. In earlier years he enjoyed meeting friends for coffee at the Flames Restaurant, and when time allowed, he loved to go frog gigging and fishing.
As a man of faith Gene was a lifelong member of the Brinkley First Baptist Church where he was active for many years as Treasurer and a Deacon.
On January 13, 2025, at the age of 94, Gene passed away in Little Rock, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication to his family. His impact on his community will always be remembered, as his selflessness touched the lives of many. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William T. and Elsie Talley Roy, son Barry Eugene Roy, brother Wallace Roy, and son-in-law Tommy Lee Thompson.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 71 years, Jean Roy, his son Kerry Roy(Erin) of Little Rock, and daughters Debbie Thompson of Brinkley, Kathy Emerson (Tony) of Colt, and daughter-in-law Jeanette Roy of Hensley. He also leaves behind sisters, Earlene Coleman, Doris Patterson, and Betty Gray, and brother Buddy Mooneyham, 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
The family would like to thank the Gentiva medical team who compassionately took care of Gene this last year and ministered to him and the family, particularly these recent days.
