Robert Garfield
Hicks
September 23, 1929 — April 14, 2021
Brinkley
Robert Garfield Hicks was born on September 23, 1929 in the small farming town of Hunter, Arkansas. He was the last born of six children in the family of Albert and Essie (Melvin) Hicks. He received education in Hunter and later attended High School in Brinkley.
Well known in the Brinkley community and surrounding areas, Robert began his working career at the former Griner's Restaurant. For a time, he enjoyed the comradery of the local patrons, who stopped in to partake of the daily menu. From there he accepted a job with the H.P. Warren Sawmill in Brasfield. He remained with that company until securing a position as the assistant manager at the Sterling Store in Brinkley.
Many of today's generation may not remember the following businesses, which employed Robert as part of their staff; the Tupper Shoe Store, Esquire's and Kaycee's Dept Store.
He currently attended times of worship at the Cotton Plant Baptist Church. He was very active in his community, helping several local churches with cleaning and maintenance. He also volunteered many hours with the American Legion.
Sadly, through the years, four of Robert's siblings passed away, leaving only he and older sister, Josephine, better known as "Rustie". As the senior years came along, the road between Brinkley and Cotton Plant, where she lived, became well-traveled. They enjoyed spending the day together, often grocery shopping and having lunch.
Blessed with a long life of 91 years, Robert was a quiet man, always well dressed and offered to others a gentleman's kind word. Recently he began to experience health challenges and as a result passed away in North Little Rock on Wednesday April 14, 2021.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Vernon Lee Hicks, Melvin Hicks, Dorothy Glenn and Jane Vanover.
Robert is survived by sister Rustie Copeland of Cotton Plant and a host of family and friends of the community.
