Larry Thomas
Coleman
August 21, 1942 — May 17, 2021
Holly Grove
Larry Thomas Coleman died peacefully during the early morning hours of May 17, 2021 at the age of 78 surrounded by his son and daughter.
Larry's story started on August 21, 1942, when he was born to Lawrence and Cassie Coleman in Blackton, Arkansas. He was born sixth in line of twelve children.
Larry played football and basketball for Holly Grove High School, then graduated in 1960. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello where he earned the nickname "Sleepy." With that being said, he came back home to Holly Grove, worked
and eventually took up farming.
On July 13, 1963, Larry married the love of his life, Marilyn Meyer. They spent their entire marriage in Holly Grove, and raised two children. He farmed and Marilyn raised kids until they were out of school. He later farmed with his son, Chris, until 2001, which was a dream come
true for both of them. Not being able to give up farm life completely, he drove a truck for Jeff Calloway, McClendon-Mann Gin and New People's Gin. He enjoyed farming and raising crops, but most especially raising cotton. Larry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Marvell.
He also enjoyed watching his kids, grandsons, nephews and nieces play sports. He was a faithful fan for the Arkansas Razorbacks and introduced his son and daughter to the love of watching all-things-Razorback at an early age. Larry was a very proud and opinionated board member for Marvell Academy and the Holly Grove Gin Company for many years.
Larry's story ends with his last years being lived at Chambers Nursing Home in Carlisle, where he lived after he took a tumble and broke his hip. He never conceded to giving up his truck keys and that was his last scrap of independence. He was very imaginative in his reasons for why he
should have his truck keys and how it could be managed.
He was preceded in death by his spouse, Marilyn Coleman in 2011, after 48 years of marriage; his parents, Lawrence and Cassie Coleman; brothers, Clarence, Joe and Dickie Coleman; sisters, Bobbie (Neil) Harrod and Norma Ann Orlansky.
He leaves his son, Chris (Candace) of Stuttgart; daughter, Amanda (Jason) Salecki of Searcy; three grandchildren, Kaden Jaco of Vilonia, Thomas Coleman of Crockett's Bluff and Shane Salecki of Searcy; one brother, Donald Gene Coleman(Cathy) of Gaithersburg, Maryland; sisters, Ozella Chastain of Ragtown, Arlene Coleman of Holly Grove, Brenda Dunavan of Ragtown, Lynn Dell Gray of Little Rock and Rhonda (Troy) Vaughn of Ozark; a special lifelong friend, Thomas Berry of Holly Grove, along with many nieces and nephews.
The family asks that donations be made to Marvell Academy or McCurley Cemetery in memory of Larry Thomas Coleman.
The family of Larry Coleman would like to thank the entire staff at Chambers Nursing Home in Carlisle for their abundant kindness, care and concern they provided our father while he was a resident. After 75 years of complete independence with a touch of stubbornness, he was
reluctant about committing to nursing home care. The staff made a difficult move bearable for all involved.
Visitation from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Bob Neal and Sons Funeral Home in Clarendon on Wednesday. Graveside Services will be Thursday at 10:00 am at McCurley Cemetery in Holly Grove.
