James "Dick"
Wesley Smith
February 9, 1940 — December 20, 2023
Clarendon
James Wesley Smith was born on February 9, 1940. His parents, Frank and Sally welcomed the birth of their only son into the family home located in the small community of Pickett Hill, Arkansas. When he was three years old the town was changed to Turner, but to James it would always be Pickett Hill. He received formal education through the 6th grade before putting studies aside. Beginning at an early age James was no stranger to hard work and could do most anything he was asked to do. He was a big help on the farm, especially during cotton picking season.
In time he acquired a nickname and became known as "Dick Smith" by all who knew and loved him. He married Joyce Ann Ford and on August 10th, 1963, they celebrated the birth of their daughter Dianna. With a love of family that exceeded all, Dicks greatest joys in life came from watching his family grow. In Psalms 127: it speaks of the happiness of a man who has the laughter and joy of many children in his life.
Dick was self-employed and made his living as a mechanic. However, he was known by many in the community as a "jack of all trades". No matter the project he could fix or repair anything. He loved his work and considered it one of his hobbies along with coin collecting and knives.
Dick was blessed with 83, years. Through life he became a hard worker, a husband, father and was blessed with the joys of becoming a grandfather. He was a friend to many in the community and at times of worship attended the First Assembly of God Church in Clarendon. On December 20, 2023 James passed away at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Smith and Sally Speakman, wife, Joyce Ann Ford Smith, and sisters, Fayerene Newby and Mary Jeffers.
He is survived by his daughter, Dianna Smith of Clarendon, three grandchildren, Bubba Smith (Amanda) of Clarendon, Bridgett Rappold (Justin) of Cabot, Megan Whitcomb (Jason) of Stuttgart, six great grandchildren, Hunter Rappold, Tucker Rappold, Kenzli Whitcomb, Jodie Smith, Katilyn Smith, and Wesley Dale Smith.
Visitation will be Friday, December 22, 2023 at Bob Neal & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Clarendon. Committal services will be private.
