Hazel Jeanette
Self
April 9, 1941 — July 8, 2023
Waddy
Hazel Jeanette Self was born on April 9, 1941, and the second child to Travis and Irene Caldwell. The family home was located in Aubrey, Arkansas where Hazel enjoyed childhood memories along with thirteen siblings.
As a young teen, Hazel met the love of her life Wiley "Mack" Self at a local dance. It only took two short weeks of courtship for the young couple to choose a lifetime commitment. On August 2, 1958, Hazel and Mack said I do and chose to make their home and raise a family in West Helena. They were blessed to share in the joys of raising six children and 52 wonderful years of memories before Mack's passing in 2011.
Hazel worked outside the home for a time at Bobby Brooks, as a seamstress. She later secured the position of Cafeteria Manager for the Helena-West Helena School District where she remained until retirement.
She was known for her green thumb and had the most beautiful flowers and vegetable gardens. Don't let a mole tear up her yard, or you can bet, she would stand there patiently with her shovel for just the right moment, to whack a mole. She was "the home" for all the neighborhood kids, You could always find the Seaton and Henson kids at her home day or night. Some considered her their mom.
Hazel was blessed throughout her life. She loved that she grew up in a close family and loved her siblings dearly. Some of her greatest joys in life came from caring for her grandbabies and watching them grow.
Hazel was also a lady of faith and knew the importance of her relationship with her Saviour Jesus Christ. Over the years she has called a few churches home, but her lifelong family church was the Gospel Light House where she gathered with her brothers and sisters.
On July 8, 2023, Hazel's earthly journey came to a close at the age of 82. She was preceded in death by her parents, Travis, and Irene (Heritage) Caldwell, husband, Mack Self, siblings, Thomas Caldwell, Ray Caldwell, Mary Homes, Margaret Wheeler, Donna Strode, and Veronica Caldwell.
