Florine Holloway
Miller
January 16, 1935 — January 18, 2024
Holly Grove
Florine Holloway Miller was born on January 16, 1935 in Brasfield, Arkansas and went to her Heavenly home on January 18, 2024. Flo was the third child born to Lenard and Etta Lane Holloway.
Flo's formal education was very limited. She grew up in a poor family and learned to work very hard from an early age. Her Father was a trapper during the winter time to supplement the small family income. He sometimes accidentally caught possums. In those days nothing went to waste. Flo told of dragging sacks of possums around their neighborhood selling them for 30 cents a piece. With her being the only daughter in a family of 5 children she was forced to become tough and self reliant. Her first formal job was working as a waitress at the Rushers Hotel in Brinkley while babysitting a night. Later she worked for Rex's Grill in Devalls Bluff. While working there she met her future husband Gene who was ten years her senior. She married at the age of 17. Her Father was opposed to his only daughter marrying a much older man and boycotted their wedding. He soon got over that as Gene earned his respect and trust. Flo always said that meeting and marrying Gene Miller was the greatest accomplishment of her life.
They settled on the farm at Holly Grove and built their lifelong home in 1952. Flo was naturally smart and talented at many things. First and foremost, she became an expert southern cook, excelling in many types of food including making homemade doughnuts and cinnamon rolls. Some of her skills she learned through the Home Demonstration Club meetings which she regularly attended in the 50's and 60's. She became very proficient in antique furniture refinishing and reupholstering. In the early 60's she saved an old piano that was headed for the dump from the Holly Grove first grade room. She refinished it, including replacing a missing chunk of wood, and made it beautiful. Flo was also well known for her talent in making beautiful floral arrangements for special occasions and use in the church. She was very obsessive about keeping her home spotless and taught her kids how to do housework from a very young age. She took over the housekeeping at church for many years and kept it spotless as well, down to regularly taking down the chandelier light globes and making them sparkle. For a time she enjoyed making and painting beautiful ceramic art work along side her best friend and sister-in-law Jenny Miller. As if all this was not enough along with raising five kids she also landscaped and tended her own lawn and flower gardens. In addition, she raised a big vegetable garden every year and canned and pickled produce from it.
Flo's favorite hobby probably was fishing which she was good at. She loved to compete with Gene and always beat him since she sat in front of the boat. Late one afternoon, she felt sorry for Gene and let him fish while she paddled. He caught the biggest bass of his life. She was taunting him by holding it over the water while she counted its teeth. It flopped back into the water. Fortunately, Gene let her live. Flo loved her place at East Lake and enjoyed preparing her special BBQ and hosting her entire Holloway family there for many years. Her family reciprocated by having fish fries at Brasfield where she grew up and her brothers still live. After The Pines golf course was built in 1968, she took up golf and enjoyed playing with Jenny and her other friends. Flo and Gene also loved to travel and made many trips with their traveling buddies Georgia and Bingley Jackson. Later in life, they enjoyed several trips with Mary Ann and Bill Reynolds. Flo also dearly loved to play bridge and belonged to Clarendon and Holly Grove bridge clubs. She made several lifelong friends through those bridge groups.
Flo passed away in her own bedroom with her children by her side. She was preceded by her husband, Gene W. Miller, her parents Lenard and Etta Lane Holloway, brothers Clifford and Billy Joe Holloway, son-in-law Marlon Endsley, and grandson Derek Miller. Also, by her sister-in-law Gladys (Bootsie) Fox Miller whom she loved dearly and claimed as the sister she never had.
Special thanks to Flo's daughter Cindy who gave up her retirement life for several years to move in and provide loving and professional care for her Mother and Father. Also, to daughter Cathy who gave up many weekends to give Cindy a break. Finally, thanks to our friend Queen Bailey who provided loving help and care for many years.
