Obituary

Elvira Mae Walton was born on February 18, 1925 to William and Margaret Weddle. At the time of her birth the family made their home in Hazen, Arkansas. Mae was the third born of eleven children and graduated Hazen high school in 1944. When studies came to end, she secured a job at the Jacksonville Ammunition plant where she remained for two years. When the plant closed, Mae moved to DeValls Bluff to live with her parents.

It was about this time; romance came into Mae's life when she met John Robert Walton. While they were attending a valentine party, J.R. gave her a special valentine and this began their life's journey together.  Mae loved to tell how he rode his horse and left it tied up while they attended activities at the Idlewild School.

On Oct 12, 1946 Mae and J.R. were married at the Roe Methodist Church Parsonage. Their first home was in the Honey Creek Community where he farmed. Mae took great pride in her role as a wife, mother, and homemaker. She enjoyed growing a vegetable garden, and canning the fruits of the harvest. She also loved reading just about anything. Later they moved to Stuttgart where he began his machinist work.  At some point during the years, Mae served as a cashier at Roe Mercantile.  Mae and J.r.  shared in the joys of two children and the adventures grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mae was blessed to live just two months shy of 100 years. Perhaps Elvira Mae witnesses many advances in technologies from the horse and buggy to the day of modern transportation. So much she would be able to tell us if we were privileged to sit down, share a cup of coffee and piece of her homemade pie.

As a lady of faith Mae was a lifelong member of the Roe United Methodist Church where she enjoyed fellowship and special times with her church family.  On November 30, 2024, Mae's earthly journey ended at the age of 99. She was preceded in death by her husband John Robert Walton, daughter, Janet Byers, parents, William Andrew and Margaret Olivia Weddle, brothers Edward Weddle, Lynn Weddle, Harry Weddle and sisters, Betty Walton, Martha Crymes and Helen Prier.

She is survived by her son Robert Walton (Nita) of Clarendon, brother, Sam Weddle of Frisco, Texas, sisters, Mary Sue Roach of Irving, Texas, Nancy Cherico of Conroe, Texas, Nettie Felts of Highland, IL, two grandchildren Ashley Prater (Zach) and Zach Byers (Lauren) and three great grandchildren, Bo Garrett, Keaton Byers and Madsen Byers.
