Donald Wayne Boshers (82), of Jonesboro Arkansas, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 20, 2023.
Don was born in Clarendon, Arkansas on January 2, 1941. Don graduated from Clarendon High School, where he excelled in academics and athletics. He was elected as Senior Class President for the class of 1959 and was football team captain. After graduation, Don joined the United States Postal Service full time in 1960. He worked at the USPS for the next 35 years, working his up from letter carrier to eventually being selected as Clarendon Postmaster in 1981. He served as Postmaster for 15 years until his retirement in 1996.
Don met Susan Rensch in 1959 after being introduced by his sister, Thelma. Susie and Don married in 1961 and had two children: Christopher (1962) and Laurel (1963). Susie and Don celebrated their 62nd anniversary in April of 2023.
Don was a leader in the Clarendon community, serving in a variety of roles that had a significant impact on the town and its residents. He served as Mayor of Clarendon from 1998 to 2006, during which time he was honored as Arkansas Mayor of the Year in 2004. During his tenure as mayor, Don worked tirelessly to improve his community. In 2001, he was appointed by Governor Mike Beebe to serve on the Arkansas Delta Development Authority. Don was a member of the Board of Central Arkansas Planning and Development District and the Clarendon Chamber of Commerce. As mayor, Don worked to renovate Clarendon housing and infrastructure, removing dilapidated structures, replacing them with new or rehabilitated housing units for low to moderate income families and senior citizens. He led a project to renovate the historic Merchants and Planters bank, converting it into the Clarendon welcome/tourist center.
Don was twice honored as Clarendon citizen of the year (1995 and 2001). He served as city council alderman from 1975 to 1981. He was a strong supporter of the value of sports for the development of youth, serving as Clarendon Little League Commissioner. He coached, refereed, umpired, and mentored football, basketball and baseball throughout eastern Arkansas.
Don is survived by his wife, Susie; his son, Chris (Penny); his daughter, Laurel Taylor; granddaughters Jill (Seth) Vickery, Madison Boshers, Katie (Joey) Taylor, and Elly Boshers; his sisters Thelma (Robert) Kelly and Ruby Roberts. He is predeceased by his parents Milo and Mattie, brothers James (AKA Sonny) and Tommy; and sister Betty Pruett.
